Creative Dan Bernard

Design

I founded Tricorn Books with my wife Gail in 2007 after a decade teaching at universities and colleges in Chichester, London and Winchester. I’d taught across a broad range of subjects, from MA Photography and Design to Foundation, and also a Level 1 Beacon-award winning art and design course in Chichester.

We originally set up 131 Design Ltd specialising in creative photography, design and film; quickly establishing an exciting client list and folio of work. The unique financial climate in 2008 quickly suggested we needed to diversify to stay afloat, so we opened Tricorn Books. The name came from our first publishing client, Dr Celia Clark, requesting we design publish and print her tour de force The Tricorn: The Life and Death of a Sixties Icon.

We have now published over 250 books with a client list as diverse as the Household Cavalry, Hugo Boss and Polar explorer Alex Hibbert. We have travelled to the Falklands, Borneo  Svalbard and New Zealand on commissions, we met some amazing people and had unparalleled access to some pretty unique locations and events.

It’s been a good journey so far…

Editorial Liz Bourne

Editor and writer

I started my publishing career at the age of eight when I wrote and illustrated a book about the kings and queens of England. Unfortunately, it wasn’t picked up by a major publisher, probably because I only had the patience to cover four of our monarchs, and my range of felt tip pens was limited to yellow, pink and green.

A few years on, following a stint at a video production company in Fulham and many years representing Great Britain at Ultimate Frisbee, I landed a job at HarperCollins Publishers in London. Here in the natural history department I learnt the craft of editing and proofreading, eventually managing the Collins Gem series and highly renowned New Naturalist books. I even got to meet David Attenborough.

Following the birth of my first child, I continued to work with Harper Collins in a freelance capacity, and then moved on to writing for magazines. In the belief that having three children under the age of five wasn’t challenge enough, a few years later I decided to launch my own magazine. I ran this for four years before selling on the business. Since then, I have been a newspaper editor, taught media writing at the University of Portsmouth and now offer editing and writing services for a range of clients. And I still occasionally throw a Frisbee too.

Marketing Gail Baird

Having worked for a range of organisations in marketing and communications from multi-national blue chip corporations to the charity sector, I have gained a wealth of experience in project management, commercial and business development. Not only that, but my training in art and design enables me to support the creative process, translating what our clients want into an outstanding product we can all be proud of.

Like the book we produced for the Household Mounted Cavalry, The Queen’s own guard, titled: Uniquely British; A Year in the Life of The Household Cavalry. This project took almost a year to complete – covering events from the Royal Wedding of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 to the Diamond Jubilee in 2012. We worked closely with the Commanding Officer and his team out of an ‘Opps’ room at the Knightsbridge barracks.

While the experience initially felt a bit like a ‘David and Goliath’ type scenario, it is evident that being able, flexible, enthusiastic, mature and ‘can do’ professionals allowed us to do our job – exceptionally well.

TRICORN Books have done sterling work to bring this project in on time, on budget, and with work of the highest quality. They did this in difficult circumstances . . . they always did so with a smile in their faces. Gail, Dan and the team are highly professional and effective, and I could not have asked for more from them. They were a pleasure to work with. Lt Col Dan Hughes, Commanding Officer, Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.
